How it works
It contains the active ingredient clonazepam, which belongs to a group of medicines known as benzodiazepines. It has anticonvulsant properties which help to manage seizures.
Usage And Safety
Dosage
Adults : Initial upto 0.5mg three times daily. Titrate : Increase by 0.5-1mg every 3 day. Max : 20mg/day. Children : All forms of epilepsy : 1 mnth-1 yr , initially 250mcg at night for 4 nights , increased over 2-4 wk to usual maintenance dose of 0.5-1mg at night ( may be given in 3 divided doses if necessary ) ; 1-5 yr , initially 250 mcg at night for 4 nights , increased over 2-4 wk to usual maintenance of 1-3 mg at night ( may be given in 3 divided doses if necessary ; 5-12 yr , initially 500 mcg at night for 4 nights , increased over 2-4 wk to usual maintenance dose of 3-6 mg at night ( may be given in 3 divided doses if necessary ) . Always consult your doctor or pharmacist for dose adjustment.
Side Effects
Fever, general deterioration, coated tongue , Palpitations, cardiac failure including cardiac arrest , increased salivation, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, encopresis, dry mouth, increased appetite, abdominal pain, sore gums, gastritis, epigastric symptoms and hepatomegaly , gynecomastia, isolated cases of reversible development of premature secondary sexual characteristics in children (incomplete precocious puberty) , Anemia, leukopenia (WBC below 4000/cu mm), decreased platelet count (thrombocytopenia), eosinophilia and lymphadenopathy.
Drug Interactions
Phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, lamotrigine and valproate , fluconazole , sertraline , fluoxetine , alcohol, narcotics, narcotic analgesics, muscle-relaxants, barbiturates, non-barbiturate hypnotics, anxiolytics/sedatives, antihistamines, phenothiazines, thioxanthene and butyrophenone classes of antipsychotic agents, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, and anticonvulsants , Grapefruit juice
Indication
It is used for the treatment of certain types of seizures.
When not to Use
Patients who are hypersensitive to other benzodiazepines, this drug or to any ingredient in the formulation or component of the container , Severe respiratory insufficiency , Severe hepatic impairment as benzoiazepines.
Precautions
Precaution
Concomitant use of CLONAZEPAM and opioids may result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death.
Warnings
Warning 1
A paradoxical increase in seizure activity or the appearance of new seizure types has occurred in a very few patients during treatment with clonazepam.
Warning 2
The abrupt withdrawal of clonazepam, particularly in those patients on long-term, high dose therapy, may precipitate status epilepticus. Therefore, as with any other anticonvulsant, gradual withdrawal is essential when discontinuing CLONAZEPAM.
Warning 3
Advise both patients and caregivers about the risks of respiratory depression and sedation when CLONAZEPAM is used with opioids.
