Pyrolate (Glycopyrrolate) is an anti-cholinergic drug. It is a synthetic quaternary ammonium compound. Glycopyrrolate inhibits the muscarinic actions of acetyl choline. Pyrolate is a potent anti – sialagogue, 4-5 times more potent than atropine. The highly polar quaternary ammonium group of glycopyrrolate limits its passage across lipid membranes, such as the blood brain barrier, in contrast to atropine sulphate and scopolamine hydrobromide, therefore devoid of undesirable central nervous system effects.
