Indications
This drug is mainliy used for urinary tract infections.
Side Effects
This drug can cause anorexia (loss of appetite), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, acute and chronic pulmonary reactions, peripheral neuropathy, hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema, anaphylaxis, inflammation of salivary glands, urticaria, rash and itching. Rarely, it can cause cholestatic jaundice, hepatitis, exfoliative dermatitis (scaling of skin), erythema multiforme, pancreatitis, joint pain, blood disorders including agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia (decreased platelets), and aplastic anemia (deficiency of all types of blood cells due to bone marrow dysfunction). This drug can also cause benign intracranial hypertension and transient alopecia (hairloss), as well as Steven-Johnson syndrome.
Warnings

Please consult your physician before using this medicine during pregnancy.

You are advised to not use this medicine while breastfeeding.

While taking this drug, one should be careful if he/she suffers from anemia, diabetes mellitus, electrolyte imbalance, vitamin B and folate deficiency, and pulmonary disease. On long term therapy, monitor liver function and monitor for pulmonary symptoms, especially in elderly (discontinue if deterioration in lung function); there is also susceptibility to peripheral neuropathy (damaged peripheral nerves), false positive urinary glucose, (if tested for reducing substances); urine may be colored yellow or brown.
Contraindications
This drug is not to be given to infants less than 3 months old, as well as patients with G6PD deficiency, acute porphyria, kidney impairment (eGFR lt; 45ml/min/1.73m2 but may be used for 3-7 days if multidrug resistant lower UTI suspected and eGFR 30-44ml/min/1.73m2 if benefits outweigh risks).
