Chloramphenicol works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It does this by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, preventing the formation of peptide bonds between amino acids. This halts the growth of bacterial proteins, thereby inhibiting the replication of bacteria. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including those responsible for eye infections.
